What Are The Best Tires With The Longest Lasting Traction And Why?

When the stormy and winter seasons arrive, this is one of the most common questions we‘re asked at Next Tires. The answer, which is pretty simple, lies in the tread makeup of each tire. But first, allow us to share with you the most common descriptions, or types, of tires that have the most traction built into them.

Now that we’re familiar with the types of tires that have the most traction, let’s talk about three components of tire construction that give the best tires the most effective and longest lasting traction.

Improved Rubber Compounds

The first component of good traction lies in the composition of the tire’s tread. Because tire manufacturers can’t use just any rubber, especially when it comes to gripping roads in wet, snowy, or icy conditions, tire engineers created a special tread compound, called silica, for improved traction.

The addition of silica in the tire’s tread greatly improves the quality of the tire. Silica also allows tires to better handle the varying temperatures, think summer and winter, making them more pliable under the stress of extreme hot and cold conditions. This pliability enhances your tire’s grip on roads and highways while driving. You might think of silica like gum on hot pavement; it seems to stick no matter how hard you try to remove it.

It’s important to note, if you’re in the market to buy new tires that safely and effectively handle all of the elements you’ll face, it’s best to buy your next tires from trusted tire stores and professionals who offer high quality tire brands. For example, respected for their high-quality tires, manufacturers like Toyo, Pirelli, Nitto, Nexen, Kumho, Hankook, and Cooper, use silica in the tread compounds of their best all-season and all-terrain tires.

Unfortunately, this is not the case when buying cheap, off-brand tires, most of which you’ve not likely heard of. This also explains why most cheap tires have such poor, all season traction and performance. We don’t want you wasting money on inexpensive, poor quality tires. Instead, Next Tires is here to help you save money on high-quality, long lasting tires.

The Importance of Tread

The second component of good traction is found in siping the tread pattern of the tire. As a general rule, the more angles (or sipes) there are in a tires tread, the more biting edges the tire has for gripping, or grabbing hold of, the road. And while this is true for most tires, higher quality tires, from brands like Cooper, Hankook, Kumho, Nexen, Nitto, Pirelli and Toyo, include full depth siping in their best all-season and all-terrain tires.

To clarify the difference, siping is marked by the squiggly lines you may see on your tires all season or all terrain tread pattern. In contrast, full depth sipes are not only visible on the surface of the tread, they extend all the way down, through the tread, to the body of the tire. This is important because, full depth sipes allow maximum bite and traction throughout the life of the tire and, most importantly, in all weather conditions.

For example, in dry, summer weather, full depth siping helps braking, cornering, and side-to-side maneuvering. In wet, spring and fall conditions, sipes help prevent hydroplaning by forcing water to pass through the various grooves and channels in a tire’s tread. And in the winter, full depth siping actually bites into snow and ice to provide hundreds of additional gripping angles for maximum traction.

But keep in mind, full depth siping is not found in cheap, no-name tires. Adding full depth sipes is a more costly manufacturing process, currently found (only) in the best tires for sale, from the top tire companies.

Is Your Tire A Stud?

The third component of good traction we’d like to share is stud-ability. This is the tire’s ability to be studded with aluminum pins that provide even greater traction; this is in addition to silica compounds and full depth siping. In most cases, the type of tires having this capability are the extreme snow and ice rated tires, more commonly found in areas with severe winters.

Traction Matters!

As you can see, the traction your tires have is really important for the safety of you, your family, and your fellow drivers. And, no matter the elements you’re dealing with, if you need all-season traction, DO NOT buy poorly made, cheap tires! If the tires you’re looking to buy don’t include the technologies we’ve shared with you here, your traction will be limited.

Not to mention, if you choose to buy lower quality tires, your tire tread and traction may only last half as long as they’re supposed to. And we know you don’t intend to pay good money for half the product (life). But, with a great selection of high quality tires on sale at Next Tires, you can count on the traction you depend on to perform as well, and last as long, as expected.
