Next Tires Simple Tips To Help You Plan For Future Tire Purchases.

Published in June of 2013, an article by the Los Angeles Times highlighted the growing market for Rent-A-Tire stores, and how they’re able to exploit customers who desperately need tires. Unfortunately, many of these, tire rental or rent-to-buy, customers can’t afford to purchase four new tires, all at once, leaving them few options.

At Next Tires we find these, and other aggressive and predatory, sales practices appalling. We believe we can shed some light on how to help you avoid falling into the trap of: (a) paying exorbitant interest rates (≤ 120%) that may have you paying, as much as, 4x times the fair and reasonable, retail price for new tires; or (b) worrying about missing one payment for fear your tires may be repossessed, all for the convenience of paying “smaller” monthly payments. If you believe (the application of) knowledge is power, we’d like to share a few tips we believe will alleviate the stress and shock of buying your next set of tires.

Tip #1: Familiarize Yourself With The Cost Of Your Tires In Advance

The average cost for a set of 4 new tires is $400 to $500. For $450 you can buy a new tablet or laptop; book a 3-night stay on the Las Vegas strip; or buy a multi-year gym membership. What’s most important though, is knowing (about) how much you should save before having to buy new tires, greatly reducing the sticker shock, at the time of purchase.

For those of us with cars, tires are a necessity. Preparing, financially and mentally, for the inevitable cost of new tires not only relieves much of the stress, it provides more time to carefully weigh options, and make a more informed decision. It’s kind of like knowing you have to work an overtime shift the day before. Having that time to mentally prepare yourself is a lot more comforting than being told on your lunch break you now have to work a 10 or 12-hour shift. Ugh!

How Do You Familiarize Yourself w/ the Cost of Buying New Tires?

Step 1: Let’s begin by collecting the following information: (a) your tire size (ex. 205/55R16) and service description (ex. 91W), can be found on the tires sidewall; and (b) the year, make and model of your vehicle. Your tire size and service description are the most important, especially if you, or the previous owner, upgraded the wheel and tire size on your car.

We believe we’ve created a simple set of tire buying tools that will prepare you for the inevitable, often costly, new tire purchase. We also hope to empower you to save time and money, during your Next Tires shopping experience.

Did You Know? The average online tire buyer saves $150 to $200 versus a similar purchase of 4 new tires in-store. A variety of factors may contribute to this, like tire sales requirements that may include, restrictions on discounts and pricing, or strict limits on units sold. Keep in mind, this is all before factoring in the tire stores overhead expenses, including office rental and supplies; leasing warehouse space and tire install equipment; and fees, some recurring, for equipment maintenance, franchising, installation, insurance, utilities and more. Some, if not most, of these costs will be passed on to you, the consumer. So, a savings of $150 to $200, when buying tires online, is as real as your wallet gets. We like the sound of that.

Tip #2: Buying Local vs. Online: Familiarize Yourself With New Tire Installation Costs

Many local tire stores offer Free Installation as part of your tire purchase. What’s most surprising is, these same stores may (have to) charge fees, some of which are based on the laws in your area. For example, in California, depending on your place of installation, you may encounter some of the following charges:

  • Environmental Tire Fee = $1.75/tire or $7.00¹
  • Waste Tire Disposal Fee = $2.00/tire or $8.00¹
  • Valve Stems = $3.00/tire or $12.00
  • (Lifetime) Balance & Rotation = $8.00/tire or $32.00
  • Extended Tire Warranty = $10.75/tire or $43.00
  • Specialty Tire Mounting = $5.00/tire or $20.00
  • Lug Nut Replacement = $2.00/lug nut or $8.00
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring Reset = $5.00/tire or $20.00

¹ Indicates a required charge.

So much for saving an average of $150 to $200. As you can see, these costs can quickly add up in excess of $100, stressing you and your wallet, while quickly chipping away at those planned savings. The installation fees listed above are only an example based on available advertised prices and will vary depending on your location. Being aware of these extra install charges will prepare you for the additional costs of an upcoming tire purchase. We believe knowing is (half) the battle.

Tip #3: Save Monthly In Advance of A Large Tire Purchase

As mentioned above, the average cost for a set of 4 new tires is between $400 and $500. Wouldn’t it be wise to begin saving now? At Next Tires, we believe so. Instead of paying $50/month for the life of your tires and maybe longer, to some predatory rent-a-tire shop, who will jack up your interest rate or threaten repossession if you miss (any) tire payments, we encourage you to start saving now. Pay yourself the $10, $20, or $30 per month, saving money in advance of your next tire purchase. Most of us spend that $30 in (less than) the blink of an eye on the various monthly subscription services, daily $4 morning coffees, and regular $20+ “work-related” lunches. We think, one less coffee per week or “work” lunch per month, is worth beating the stress of scrambling for new tire money.

Fast-forward two years, when you need new cheap, high-quality all-season tires, or the best handling, high performance tires, or the best compact and light truck tires. You can feel good knowing you successfully used NextTires.com to plan for the price of and save, $360 at $10/month (music streaming); $720 at $20/month (daily coffee); or $1,080 at $30/month (gym membership), for your new tires. And while it’s reasonable to expect tire prices will increase due to inflation, by having (most of) the money saved in advance, you’re only coming out of pocket a few extra dollars, relative to what you’ve already saved. That has to be music to your ears. Knowing we’ve helped you save money, time, and the anguish of such a big expenditure, is music to our ears!

Next Tires believes knowledge and preparation are the best ways to avoid predatory sales tactics and unreasonably expensive, purchase options. By familiarizing yourself with all of the associated costs prior to shopping, you can properly plan, prepare, and save for your next set of new tires.
